The Schifffahrtsmuseum is housed in a former fish market
hall directly by Kiel’s old harbour, and there could hardly be a better
place to present the maritime history of this proud old naval and industrial
city. You can see ship models, nautical instruments, maritime paintings,
old figureheads, the Kaiser Panorama with 3D images and a huge harbour
panorama measuring ten feet high and thirty feet in length – Kiel’s biggest
painting. The main attraction is the Brandtaucher , the
world’s first fully-functional submarine, which was built in Kiel in 1850
by Wilhelm Bauer. If you feel like some fresh air after your tour of the
museum you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit the neighbouring Museum
Harbour, where three beautiful old vintage ships lie at anchor. They provide
a taste of seafaring romance and some vivid insights into what it must
have been like to live and work on board ships in past centuries.
